Bird Water Ocarinas
Bird water
ocarinas are made in Thailand from fired clay. A little water can be
poured into a hole in the bird and when you blow down the tail the water
causes a warbling sound to be produced by the ocarina.
The ocarina
is about 7.5cm (3 inches) in length and is supplied in a box. It is
a good idea to tie a cord around the neck of the bird if it is being
used by small children. If the cord is placed around the child's neck
it will protect the ocarina if it is dropped.
Ocarinas
are very ancient instruments going back many thousands of years. They
are thought to have originated in China or the Americas and are usually
oval and ceramic with several holes allowing different notes to be played.
They are thought to be precursors of flutes. The oval shape lent it
to decoration (though not normally a bird although ocarina means little
goose in Italian) and the use of water gives our ocarinas novelty value.
In 19th
century Italy the ocarina was perfected to be able to play a full range
of notes - previously they could only play a limited range. In America
ocarinas are sometimes called sweet potatoes because of their usual
rounded form.
