How
to Play Metal Tibetan Singing Bowls
To play
a metal Tibetan singing bowl, place it on one hand keeping your hand
flat. Alternatively some people find it easier to hold bowls on their
fingertips avoiding touching its sides. Move the playing stick around
the outside rim of the bowl using fairly firm pressure.
You will
feel the vibration build up through your hand and start to hear the
bowl sing. You can continue with this to get an even ringing tone or
stop playing at this point lift the bowl up to your ear to hear the
beautiful and complex sound that it makes.
The bowl
can also be played by tapping the rim with the stick. Bowls have many
uses including meditation and balancing chakras.
The note
and tone of some bowls may be changed by putting in a little water and
then playing the bowl. Gently swirling the water around as the bowl
is played produces interesting effects. It is best to use spring or
bottled water when doing this.
How
to Choose a Metal Tibetan Singing Bowl
To some
extent this is a matter of personal taste. Heavier Tibetan singing bowls
play deeper sounds and have a longer lasting resonance than lighter
bowls.
Machine
made metal bowls are generally easy to play and especially good for
children. They tend to be very consistent in size and are usually polished.
Hand beaten
bowls have more complex and overtone rich range of sounds but there
is more of a knack to playing them than with machine made bowls. These
traditional Tibetan bowls are sold by weight and the size and shape
can vary a lot.
