Salt lamps
are made from pieces of natural salt lit from within by T light candles
or electric lights causing them to glow with the natural orange colour
of salt.
As salt
is a natural substance each lamp varies. Some are paler, others more
orange. Usually they have patches of various colours often in bands
across the salt. Lamps also vary in their proportions and are sold by
weight.

Candle Salt Lamps
Cone
candle lamps consist of a black metal spiral frame which holds
a shaped conical piece of salt. A tea light candle in a hole in
the top of the cone provides the light showing the beautiful colour
of natural salt.

The salt
is millions of years old and is mined in the foothills of the Himalayas
where it has lain undisturbed and unpolluted. Lamps are made from either
naturally shaped pieces or shaped as in the sphere. The
natural salt and sphere electric lamps are on wooden bases and supplied
complete with bulb, cable with an in line switch and a 3 pin plug. The
electrical fittings are for the UK. The candle lamps are made entirely
of salt with the base sawn flat and a hole drilled in the top to take
tea light candles.

Benefits
of Salt Lamps
Apart from
their aesthetic beauty salt lamps are reputed for a variety of beneficial
effects
As
salt tends to attract moisture these lamps should not be washed or used
in humid situations or out of doors. If they do show signs of dampness
turning on the lamp or lighting the candle will dry them out. It is
a good idea to run salt lamps for a short while every few days so that
warmth of the bulb or the candle keeps the salt dry. Ensure first that
any electrical parts are dry before using the lamp.
Salt lamps
can be cleaned by dusting with a soft brush. The bulb may be changed
by withdrawing the light fitting from the base. Replace the bulb with
a similar one. They use small Edison screw fitting pygmy or candle bulbs
of 15 or 25W. If the fuse in a plug fails it should be replaced with
an identical fuse. T light candles are readily available and can be
replaced from the top of the salt crystals.
