Paua
Shell - What is it?
Paua is
a variety of abelone, a mollusc that is unique to New Zealand. It lives
on the rocky sea bed in fairly shallow water. Divers collecting are
not allowed to use any diving equipment and can only free dive to collect
them. The population appears to be stable and this seems like a sustainable
way of harvesting paua.
The Maori
have traditionally used paua shell in their art because of the shell's
range of intense colours and its iridescence. They also regarded the
flesh of the paua as a delicacy.
Paua
Shell Colours
Some paua
shell rings use the natural shell, but it can also be dyed. When coloured
in this way the natural patterning remains with a background colour.
Rings are available in natural, opal, blue, green, red and purple colours.
