These
pan pipes (sometimes written as panpipes) are hand made in Peru. They
are a traditional Peruvian instrument associated with music from the
Andes. Each set of pan pipes consists of a number of hollow tubes closed
at the bottom and open at the top.
The tubes
in panpipes have been carefully cut and shaped to tune them. Longer
tubes give deeper notes and shorter ones higher pitched notes. The pan
pipes are played by blowing across the top of the tubes producing a
gentle flute like sound.

Zampona
Pan Pipes
Zampona
Pan Pipes have two rows of pipes with one row one set behind the other.
In the top photo the two darker sets of pan pipes are of the zampona
design. The centre photo also shows zampona panpipes. They each have
a row of six tubes with a row of seven tubes behind. The lines of pipes
are straight, not curved like antara pipes. This makes the zampona
design
very compact.
Antara
Pan Pipes
Antara
Pan Pipes have a single row of pipes. The small light coloured panpipes
in the top picture
and the pipes in the bottom picture are antara
pan pipes. Apart from the light coloured pan pipes in the top picture,
antara pan pipes are made with the tubes bound together in a curved
shape to make them more convenient to play.
