Traditionally
guiros were made from hollow gourds. They are decorated with carving
and blackened burned areas. Part of the gourd is carved into a
series of parallel grooves leaving raised ridges which can be
seen in the top photo. The playing stick (in the other photo)
is run over the ridges to produce the sound.
We
sell gourd guiros in two sizes. The large guiro (about 40cm, 16
inches long) has small objects inside and can also be used as
a shaker. The small guiro guiro (about 30cm, 12 inches) cannot
be used as a shaker. It has two sound holes carved into the gourd.
These
guiros are very well finished and produce a good sound.
