Guiros are hollow musical instruments from South America which are played by running a stick over a series of ridge carved onto the surface.

Gourd Guiros

Large Gourd Guiro Large Gourd Guiro
Small Gourd Guiro Small Gourd Guiro

Traditionally guiros were made from hollow gourds. They are decorated with carving and blackened burned areas. Part of the gourd is carved into a series of parallel grooves leaving raised ridges which can be seen in the top photo. The playing stick (in the other photo) is run over the ridges to produce the sound.

We sell gourd guiros in two sizes. The large guiro (about 40cm, 16 inches long) has small objects inside and can also be used as a shaker. The small guiro guiro (about 30cm, 12 inches) cannot be used as a shaker. It has two sound holes carved into the gourd.

These guiros are very well finished and produce a good sound.

Frog Guiros

You can buy Guiros from our online shop

Natural Frog Guiro Green Frog Guiro Green and Natural Finish Frog Guiros

These guiros are in the form of carved wooden frogs. They are made in different sizes and in a natural wood or green stained finish. Each guiro comes with a matching playing stick. The centre of the frog is hollowed out to make the guiro resonant and a series of ridges carved along the back of the frog. They produce a remarkably frog like sound.

Guiros is sometimes spelled huiros which mimics the pronunciation of the word.
