The
History of the Green Man
Although
the Green Man is very much associated with England it is very
widespread and appears in many cultures around the world. Carved
in wood and stone it appears in churches and cathedrals from 11th
century onwards. Later they can also be seen in stained glass,
manuscripts and metalwork. During the arts and Crafts movement
it staged a revival and it also began to be used in secular settings.
Europeans
spread the Green Man to North America, Australia and other colonies,
but it can be traced back to an 8th century temple in Rajasthan,
India and to 2nd century sites in Iraq and Lebanon. Some sources
think that the Green Man may have originated in Asia Minor.
