Green
Man Plaques
We
now stock green man wall plaques which can be used used indoors
or in the garden. The wall plaque is made from moulded resin with
a hanging point on the back and is based on the historic green
man that is commonly found in churches and as decoration on buildings.
The face is in a design of branches and foliage.

Types
of Green Men
Some
designs of green men, such as our wall plaque, depict a foliar
head completely covered in green leaves.
Another
design has foliage sprouting from his mouth and sometimes also
nostrils and ears.

The
carved wood Green Man from a church in Ludlow (centre left) is
of this design as is the stone Green Man in the bottom photo from
Rosslyn Chapel. The Green Man is frequently found in churches
and is thought by many to be a pagan relic incorporated into Christianity.
Sometimes
the Green Man incorporates a fountain from his mouth. An example
of this is the metal fountain head (centre right) from Italy.

The
History of the Green Man
Although
the Green Man is very much associated with England it is very
widespread and appears in many cultures around the world. Carved
in wood and stone it appears in churches and cathedrals from 11th
century onwards. Later they can also be seen in stained glass,
manuscripts and metalwork. During the arts and Crafts movement
it staged a revival and it also began to be used in secular settings.
Europeans
spread the Green Man to North America, Australia and other colonies,
but it can be traced back to an 8th century temple in Rajasthan,
India and to 2nd century sites in Iraq and Lebanon. Some sources
think that the Green Man may have originated in Asia Minor.
