Agates
occur in a large range of colours and patterns. They frequently have
a banded appearance. Blue lace agate has delicate patterning in shades
of blue. Moss agate has a fern like appearance.
Agates
formed as nodules in volcanic rocks. As the lava cooled gases form hollow
spaces in the rock. These gradually filled with silicaceous matter building
up layers of chalcedony and quartz from the outside to form the banding.
The first outermost layer of an agate nodule is frequently green and
iron rich. Some agates are solid but others have not been completely
filled and have an inner space often filled with small quartz or amethyst
crystals. Nodules of agate can be huge; the largest is thought to be
one exhibited in Germany a century ago which weighed over sixty tons.
We have
various agates, such as moss, tree and blue lace agate, as tumble
stones. Several agates are available as dowsing
pendulums. We also have agate spheres,
angels and other polished shapes and as natural
pieces. Stock constantly changes so follow the links to check
current availability of agates.
